Hello Everyone!

In January 2012 I will begin recording the complete set of Chopin's 24 Preludes for solo piano. I have a unique vision for it that involves a narrative scheme. I've learned that Chopin led a highly compartmentalized life and feel this reflected in the alternating moods of the Preludes when they are played in succession. I will underline the contrast between the extroverted and introverted Preludes by recording them in two separate spaces. Damon Whittemore will engineer both sessions, first in the living room of B.G. Thorpe and later in a concert hall. When these recordings are complete I plan to assemble educational materials to accompany performances for schools in the Northeast.

I'll be singing (and NOT playing the piano or wurlitzer or moog or toy piano or anything) this Thursday, September 29th at Roulette, which has just moved to 509 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217.

Jessica Pavone is the recipient of a Jerome Foundation grant and has written a collection of wonderful songs that I'll be singing, accompanied by members of the Toomai Quartet, guitarist Mary Halvorson and Tomas Fujiwara on drums.

Mia Doi Todd was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Trained as a classical vocalist in her adolescence and teenage years. Her first three

records all feature minimal, acoustic instrumentation, emphasizing her soaring vocals and finely wrought lyrics, the latter redolent of romantic poetry, but employing puns, alliteration, homonyms and many other verbal experiments.

Christie and Emily's music starts dark but promptly spatters the listener with light - greens and golds, harmony and dissonance. It is an unconventional rocker with its Brazilian baiao rhythm seated in a psychedelic netherworld-a suicide ballad, invoking the sordid tales of the Harry Smith Anthology.

Drawilings: Think of music that you might find on a children's horror movie soundtrack accompanied by a high pitched yet melodically poppy & eerie voice and you have a song by Drawlings

Quick Words is out today on Klangbad!

Quick Words is a recording made in the Brooklyn wintertime.

For Christy & Emily, these songs are a preview of their newer sound with bass (Pete Kerlin) and drums (Kristin Mueller). Later in the spring of 2011, Christy & Emily will be heading to the Faust Studio in southern Germany to record a new full-length album with this quartet. They are happy with the way the band allows them to expand sonically. The extra track on the digital download card is a song by Oakley Hall, called "Endtime Evangelist," off of their first self-titled album on Bulb (four years before they signed to Merge). This song has been strong on Emily's mind for half a decade, only coming out as a cover that the duo has been performing live in the last year.

Talk Normal's "Hurricane" is a soaring narrative piece. Lead by drummer Andrya Ambro's melodic lead vocal and buffeted by guitarist Sarah Register's harmonies, "Hurricane" is a sing-a-long story told with humility, grace & pleasing cacophony. Conceptual references range from U.S. Girls to Meredith Monk to Tears For Fears to The Velvet Underground – yet the sound is all their own, with an ebbing structure that carries the imagination through a manic ocean of soundscapes, wildly complex and still simple enough to be howled at the moon.

I'm playing live today on WNYC's Soundcheck. It airs at 2pm and 10pm, but will also be available online after today. Tune in to hear a great piece written by Daniel Felsenfeld "Every Composer is a Murderer" featuring Rose Bellini Jessica Schmitz and Mellissa Hughes, a somewhat musical trailer to accompany John Wesley Harding's new novel "Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer" a novel loosely based on the life of Gesualdo.

And please mark your calendars! Wednesday, March 23rd at 7pm I'll be performing as part of Kathleen Supove's series at the Flea Theater, Music with A View. Hello friends, family and wonderful listeners of C+E,

Greetings from Prague! We've been on tour now for over a week and had some truly wonderful adventures. I'm watching Brock Monroe (light-show genius and amazing tour companion) pack one of his many large suitcases as he is leaving us today. We were so blessed to have him for these past seven concerts. He wowed the Swiss at the Palace, entranced the audience in Berlin, received the highest praise from the curator of the Neu Museum in Nurnberg and cast a spell last night in Prague. We will feel very boringly lit without him!

We started the tour with two Nightingales shows that were amazing with Fliss (Violet Violet) on drums and had the honor to open for FM Einheit and Jochen Irmler (Faust) in Berlin, which was also incredible. Our van broke down on the Autobahn near the Munich Soccer Stadium. Peter Schneider came to rescue us with a car full of journalists. His electric car doors broke at the same time, trapping the journalists by the road as well! We recovered the next day with Andi Schmidt driving a giant van to meet us (bigger than our NY apt, or so it seems) and the beautiful and talented Dorothea Muensch (who has been opening for us the past few nights with her stunning and gorgeous music) drove us on the Romantische Strasse through old haunted towns just in time for our gig in Weikersheim.

Now we are heading into the Czech countryside for a show in Jindrichuv Hradec, with Munich again on the horizon, where we play a private party in a custom car factory !?!.

We're a bit worried about the French transportation strike which has already effected our drummer, Kristin Mueller's travels to and from her tour with Anton Sword. Will there be enough diesel to drive from Basel-Paris-Bordeaux-Spain? Should we just take a boat to Barcelona? These are the things we have to contemplate today in the car.

The members of Till by Turning met while studying instrumental performance at Oberlin Conservatory. Inspired in part by a unique instrumentation (violin, viola, cello, bassoon, and piano), their first concert was a program of Sofia Gubaidulina's music. Since then, they have commissioned and premiered music by Jessica Pavone, Aaron Siegel, Sabrina Schroeder, Alex Ness, and Katherine Young. Their repertoire also includes pieces by Morton Feldman, Olivier Messiaen, Harold Meltzer, James Tenney, and Christian Wolff.

His wide range and unique vision has led to his work with a variety of contemporaries like DJ/rupture, Modest Mouse, and Eyvind Kang. Brent studied in Seattle with jazz violin great Michael White and renowned cellist Walter Grey, an original member of the Kronos Quartet. He resides in Brooklyn, NY.

An active performer in New York City for the past decade, Jessica Pavone has been leading her own bands; Army of Strangers and The Pavones, has performed in ensembles led by Anthony Braxton, Matthew Welch, Matana Roberts, Elliott Sharp, and Jeremiah Cymerman, as well as such collective groups as the Mary Halvorson/Jessica Pavone Duo and The Thirteenth Assembly.

As a composer, Pavone has earned grants and commissions from the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, the American Music Center, The Kitchen, MATA and the group, Till By Turning, which recently presented the European premiere of "Quotidian" at Faust's Klangbad Festival 2009 in Germany. Christy & Emily, joined by Kristin Mueller (drums) and Brock Monroe (visuals), will head to Europe in October, but not before they play the fabulous book launch party for Sara Marcus's Girls to the Front at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn, NY this Saturday, October 2nd. Mirah will also be performing and the night will include special words from Kathleen Hanna.

Highlights of the upcoming European tour include a Berlin show with members of Faust andEinsturzende Neubauten, some amazing dates in the Czech Republic and a week in Barcelona.

Kristin Mueller is a drummer who currently tours and plays with Hidden Driveways, Gloria Deluxe,The Caulfield Sisters, Lucinda Black Bear, Christy & Emily, Clare Burson, Anton Sword andMichael Hearst. ISSUE Project Room celebrates The Brooklyn Heights Association's 100th Anniversary with an event that will program channel the psychedelic spirit of poet, journalist, humanist and Brooklynite, Walt Whitman, set against the stunning waterfront backdrop on the Pier 1 Harbor View Lawn of the new Brooklyn Bridge Park on July 1st at 5 pm until midnight.

Musicians and bands including the Wingdale Community Singers, Christy and Emily, Prince Rama, and others will perform original work along with new pieces set to a marathon reading of "Leaves of Grass," recited by some of the nation's most intriguing poets.

The outdoor concert, closing with a late night program of acoustic music after 10 pm, is part of Celebrating a Century, an exciting year-long series of events highlighting Brooklyn Heights history, famous residents, and the BHA's past & future.

You are not suffering from a deja vu. This is the second C&E record to come out the last 6 months and thusly the second release party. This record is called No Rest. Its a very fascinating (even for us!) piece of work produced by Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust at Klangbad Studios in Scheer, Germany. Several reviews are below.

This is also exciting because it will be the first time we are doing an entire set as a full band. Pete Kerlin will be playing bass, Kristin Muller will be on drums. No Rest

Brooklyn based duo Christy & Emily release their third record, No Rest, produced by Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust at Klangbad Studios in Scheer, Germany. Here's the story of how it all came about:

Back in 2007 Christy & Emily were about to release their debut album, Gueen's Head, on New York label The Social Registry and they were booked to open for the legendary Nightingales. For those who don't know the legend of the Nightingales, they are the brain spawn of Robert Lloyd, infamous Birmingham native and John Peel favorite. He had been on the scene since 1977 with a band called The Prefects, who played with all the heavy hitters: The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Slits. The Prefects matured into the Nightingales during the 80's, and when NY DJ Dan Selzer reissued the old Prefects canon, he booked them a tour in the US and got them a show in Brooklyn. Enter Christy & Emily.

One wouldn't think that a post-punker like Lloyd would dig two girls singing intimate songs, but they floored him. He waltzed up to them after their show and said, "Will you come to Europe with me?"

Fast forward to August 2008. Christy & Emily play the Klangbad festival, three days of every kind of music one can drink in with German lager, all curated by Hans Joachim Irmler, the mastermind keyboardist of prog rock staple Faust. Christy & Emily play to a large crowd; open-mouthed, silent, listening, mesmerized by the duo's enchanting dynamic. After the festival Irmler invites C&E to his studio to record a brand new album for his label, Klangbad. No Rest is that album.

The Music

No Rest starts dark but promptly spatters the listener with light - greens and golds, harmony and dissonance. "Beast" is an unconventional rocker with its Brazilian baiao rhythm seated in a psychedelic netherworld. "Guava Tree" is a suicide ballad, invoking the sordid tales in the Harry Smith Anthology. There is a mellow intensity in "Firefly" that is dissipated by the mystic corridors of "Cave." Although the "Amaryllis" chords are borrowed from Schumann and Liszt this song's chorus has a nod to Brian Wilson.

The vocals of the album are lovingly attended to by Irmler. Each track, each voice, each overdub is treated with an individual style. In it we hear not only C&E expressing themselves, but Irmler as well. No Rest is in fact C&E's third release. Their second effort,Superstition, was quietly put out in November 2009 through Robert Lloyds label, Big Print. It got a lot of love in reviews, but not a lot of distribution. No Rest should have both.

The Duo

Christy

Christy learned to play guitar from a Metallica Ride The Lightning tablature book, and started playing in bands during her stay at the Rhode Island School of Design. She got exposed to a lot of good and noisy bands going to shows at the now extinct Fort Thunder. Upon moving to New York she started a band called the Lil' Fighters, who self released two works: the vinyl only Boys & Girls and the CD Freedom School. The band's original keyboardist, Walter Martin, eventually left to tour with his other project,The Walkmen. He was replaced by Emily Manzo, and this was the beginning of the current C&E.

Christy also plays guitar and sings in a punk band called the Totallys that gigs regularly in NYC. She mentors in an after school program called the Vibe Songmakers, helping students to write their own songs. In addition she was the drummer for a psych rock band called the Sumerians, and much of the drumming on the Lil' Fighters recordings is she. Her animated video for the C&E song "105 & Rising" was premiered on the TheFader.com, and her drawings have been shown and sold at the Scope Art Fair in New York.

Emily

Emily is a classically trained pianist who has studied at the New England Conservatory, the Oberlin Conservatory and Columbia University. In September 2009 her recording of the entire works of Anton Webern for soprano and piano with Jody Pou was released on the Shsk'h label to international acclaim. Her collaboration with filmmaker Paul Rowley has blossomed into a feature-length film entitled The Rooms, which will have its premiere in 2010.

The New York Times has called Emily's playing "superb" and Time Out New York has commented on her role as a "protean force with the ability to move two scenes at once." She has contributed to the recordings and live performances of Brooklyn rock bands Oneida (Jagjaguar) and Oakley Hall (Merge) and has premiered the music of Elliott Sharp, Susie Ibarra, Matt Welch and many others. She is a founding member of Till by Turning, a chamber ensemble dedicated to creating educational resources for new music and is also a mentor for the Vibe Songmakers after-school program.

"Lover's Talk" and "Superstition" come on like benign, soft-edged pop with ghosty bits of melody held together by heavenly harmonies. But there's something unsettling beneath the Wurlitzer organ wub-wub and Christy's reverb-drenched guitar. Doomy minor chords jut out and harmonies diverge as the two ladies sing of evil thoughts and bad dreams. Before long, their overt innocence feels like a crafty, almost creepy shadow play.

No Rest is Christy & Emily's new record, coming out April 6th on Klangbad. It was produced by Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust at Klangbad Studios in Scheer, Germany.

The band returned home yesterday from a German tour, which had them featured in Rolling Stone, Spex, countless national newspapers, and their music was played on numerous national radio stations. No Rest will be released on vinyl when the band returns to tour Europe in August. They'll also record another new album with Irmler for Klangbad.

My friend, DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess arrives today from Amsterdam to DJ her little heart out all week. She is an extraordinary musician who has the ability to improvise with percussionists, compose avant-garde compositions and also play sets that have you dancing all night. I really hope you can come out to some (or all!) of these events- no one will be the same. Brooklyn-based, but certainly giving no impression at all that they are urbanites, Christy and Emily have, in their third record Supernatural, made something of of earth-defying tenderness and fragile beauty.

From the ramshakle outset, the record sounds as though it's about to fall appart at the seams, shatter, or explode as the duo work their way through songs that are perfectly written ('Golden Rings' could be a Beatles cover), but undermined by a see-saw of improvised sound, dischord and randomness. 'Lover's Talk', another example, driven by Christy Edward's rudimentary electric guitar, is as heartbreaking as it is shot through with a messed up haze of confusion. On 'Nightingale', however, you get a relatively untainted taste of just how awesomely talented these folks are - and there is the crux of it: none of this is a mistake.

It seems simple, infantile even, but there's just so much to soak up here. Quite honestly, I've not heard much as beguiling as this since I first heard Palace in about 1998.

Rhys Chatham curated the original lineup of an era-shaping 50+ composers. Held at the Broome Street Kitchen, the concerts put the burgeoning Downtown scene into a transfiguring spotlight. Darmstadt is presenting an intimate cross-section of these original NMNYorkers: "Blue" Gene Tyranny, Connie Beckley, David van Tieghem, Jill Kroesen, Jon Gibson, Ned Sublette, Peter Gordon, Peter Zummo, Petr Kotik, Phill Niblock, and a performance of Meredith Monk's "Dolmen Music" by the M6. CHRISTY & EMILY Premiere Video for "105 & Rising" Superstition Out Today! Record Release Party 12/9 at The Stone

"I started reading about the fall of Saigon for personal reasons," says Christy Edwards, who created the video for "105 & Rising", the second video from Christy & Emily's superb new album Superstition. "As I browsed the internet for info, I started pulling images and animating or rotoscoping them," she continued. "105 and rising" was the cue broadcast over American Forces Vietnam Network radio for the evacuation. The song "105 & Rising" began as a simple love lost tune (indeed the song remains quite simple), but it began to be a narrative for the images with which I was working. I find it poignant to think of the Vietnam war (or any war) as a macrocosm of a dysfunctional relationship between people. Although abstract, it is a small way for me to personalize such conflicts."

"I think a little bit about Chopin's "Winter Wind" Etude Op. 25, No. 11 when I'm playing this with Christy," adds Emily Manzo. "My part isn't half as complicated as the Etude, BUT the downward chromatic lines and general feel is a nod to that piece. Plus they're both in the key of A minor."

Classically trained pianist Emily Manzo and self taught punk guitarist Christy Edwards prove a unique combination with a live repertoire that would shame the majority of so called musical explorers. The superb nine song Superstition album features C&E's usual eclectic mix of fantastic melodies, beautiful vocals and sonic experimentation.

Just a Christy & Emily update:

Our new record, Superstition is out this month. A sonic wash of electronic & classically-inspired melodic experiments, sure to captivate fans of minimalist tendencies. Christy & Emily deconstruct indie folk into its raw elements, while Kyle Bobby Dunn brings Stars-of-the-Lid-esque compositions of dynamic drone. Myrmyr is a dreamfolk duo creating an intimate chamber music, to be accompanied by Cecilia Elguero's captivating video art.

Christy plays guitar that swoops in and out of heavy reverb and analog delay. Emily plays vintage keys on a wurlitzer electric piano, and backs it up with deep organ sounds produced by a mini moog synth. Emily is a classically-trained pianist, while Christy is a self-taught indie-rock guitarist. Both occasionally thump on a floor tom, crash and swell cymbals, and play with loops and samples.

Myrmyr returns to NY to celebrate the release of their debut full-length The Amber Sea on Digitalis Recordings. The Oakland, CA-based duo of Marielle Jakobsons [aka darwinsbitch] & Agnes Szelag combine the electric cello & violin, folklore-inspired songs, and creative electronics. They first met at Mills College where they both received their MFA in Electronic Music.

I wanted to let you all know about a concert, a party and a recording, but most importantly I wanted to take a minute to say a few things about Suzanne Fiol, who passed away last week. As the founder and artistic director of Issue Project Room, Suzanne provided a wonderful space for musicians and artists. I owe many collaborations, creations and personal break-throughs to Suzanne and her willingness to program whatever my heart desired. Issue Project Room will soon move to it's new space on Livingston Street, but is still in the process of fundraising. In Nick Hallett's words: "Her dream of a space devoted to experimental music and performance has blossomed into a thriving nucleus of culture. In the past year, she secured a glittering home for its future and a million dollar grant from the city to make sure it moves. Now the work to keep her dream alive is upon us :

Hello Everyone,

I'm just writing to let you know of a few upcoming performances I have, both classical and chamber-pop. The final part of the Christy & Emily tour was wonderful...Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic treated us very well. We are now back and playing a few "welcome home" shows where our new record, Superstition, will be available. One show we will have our full band, and the other we will play as a duo. AND! we have some new t-shirts with pink bears on them, very exciting!

I'm also excited to be playing the music of Erik Satie with Daisy Press this weekend, and the music of Aaron Siegel in October. Finally, I'll be in a totally hysterical and wonderful cover band called Dionne Werewolf, playing one and only show October 31st. (!) Hope to see you at any and all of these events!

I am happy to announce that the chamber music adventurers known collectively as Till by Turning are heading off to Germany tomorrow to join me on a short tour.

The centerpiece of trip is performing at the 2009 Klangbad Festival in Scheer, DE. (http://www.klangbadfestival.de/), where we'll be giving Jessica Pavone's piece Quotidian it's Euro debut. other folks performing at this awesome 3-day event hosted by members of Faust include: Pram, Oneida, FSK, Alec Empire, the Nightingales, Dalek, and Christy & Emily.

From there, we hit the road and are playing a few shows around Germany (and one in Switzerland). many of these have come together in the last miraculous moments, so if you have any friends or very distant acquaintances in any of these parts, please send them to hear some great experimental chamber music!

On the road, we'll be performing a diverse program that includes brand-new commissions by Jim Altieri, Jason Cady, Clara Hunter Latham, Jordan McLean, and Jonathan Zorn + original music by Tillers Emily Manzo, Erica Dicker, and Katherine Young + the music of Big Star, Faust, Jessica Pavone, Ornette Coleman, and Anthony Braxton!

Hello Everyone,

Well, I dont have much time to tell the long versions of our journey so far, but the short way for me to say it is Christy and I are having what you would call an adventure!

We arrived in the UK with the "normal" stress and headaches of lost baggage (including her guitar) and immigration grumbles, but thanks to the Glastonbury invite we were allowed entry and slowly over the next few days all of the lost items were returned. Glastonbury was of course the muddy mess that it is famous for, but we saw two incredible shows: Neil Young and Horace Andy.

The UK dates went really well and we made a lot of fans in a place I've never heard of before, called Derby. I was able to join the Nightingales for my first official shows with them and had a blast. Most importantly we became part of the Garrett family, who really took care of us and helped us get medicine for Christy's case of bronchitis. We played a few shows with Gina Birch and got to meet other members of the Raincoats as well. We joined Robert Llyod on his session with John Kennedy at xfm, who is still playing tracks from our new record, Superstition.

Andi Schmid helped us across the French border with all of our gear and got us finally down to our other "family" at Klangbad studios for a few days of rest. The german dates started on July 12th and have included ship harbors (Offenbach), hippie farms (Kassel, Puch Fest), fancy restaurants (Schwerin, Munich, Berlin), east german bars (Leipzig), art gallleries (Leipzig), proper clubs (Ulm, Hamburg), pizza parlors (Buchloe), old abandoned train cars (Stuttgart), and today we travel outside of Munich to play in a small town where the local fire department has lent us their PA.

We've played on several radio stations here as well, including byte.fm in Hamburg and a great session at zundfunk here in Munich. Yesterday we got a great tour from Dirk Wagner of the Suddeutsche Zeitung and went to a pretty fabulous tomato party. We decided to end the evening with a trip to the hospital (why not?) to check out our various ailments (Christy's lingering cough and my stomach virus) and I was asked the hilarious question: "maybe it was the Munich beer?"

We travel to Vienna and the Czech Republic this weekend as our adventure continues...
