On Friday, September 6, 2013, Till by Turning will perform the world premiere of Katherine Young’s concert-length work, Four Chambered Heart, as part of the Music at First series at the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn Heights. Award-winning filmmaker and visual artist Paul Rowley has created a video installation for Four Chambered Heart that illuminates the work’s sounds, as well as avian and apocalyptic themes. This concert celebrates the recording of Four Chambered Heart, which was produced by Hans Joachim Irmler of Faust and recorded in his studio in Scheer, Germany. Till by Turning made this recording with the support of the Sparkplug Foundation.
View the facebook invite here: https://www.facebook.com/events/412698568834342/
Written for Till by Turning, Four Chambered Heart is a meditation on Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, scored for violin, clarinet, cello and piano. Composed in 1940 while he was held in a Silesian prison camp, Messiaen’s piece offers an extended reflection on the Book of Revelation (the title is taken from 10:6), while elaborating rhythmic and metric experiments that depict the "end of time" in both compositional and spiritual domains. In her 8-piece cycle for violin, viola, bassoon and piano, Young explores Messiaen’s music in her own language, incorporating improvisation, song forms, amplification, and noise. Young animates surprising resonances between her sonic materials, ecological and apocalyptic themes, and Messiaen’s musical and philosophical concerns. Working at the Experimental Television Center New York and with editor Michael Prommasit, Rowley has crafted a video
for each of the piece’s interior 6 movements using colorful patterns, shifting repetitions, and suggestive imagery. Watch a preview here: http://vimeo.com/70723507

Music At First is a monthly new music series that takes place at First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn Heights.  Music At First presents active, unique artists who primarily perform music either written by or for them, or by composers with whom they have a close collaborative relationship. Taking advantage of First Presbyterian Church's excellent sound for both amplified and acoustic instruments, Music at First began presenting concerts in 2008 in an effort to answer the need for a relaxed yet focused space for new music within the Downtown Brooklyn artistic renaissance.
Composer and bassoonist Katherine Young creates acoustic and electro-acoustic music that the New York Times describes as “raw, wailing, coloristic” with an “organic sweep.” Recent projects include a premiere by Talea Ensemble, commissions from Issue Project Room, the String Orchestra of Brooklyn and choreographer Daria Fain. Her solo bassoon release garnered praise in The Wire (“Bassoon colossus”) and Downbeat (“seriously bold leaps for the bassoon”), and about her 2012 release with her quartet Pretty Monsters, All About Jazz stated: “a sonically audacious record documenting the development of a bold young artist whose arresting improvisations are as remarkable as her engaging compositions.” As an improviser, Katherine has toured with Anthony Braxton, recorded with members of Faust and Einsturzende Neubauten and is currently a doctoral candidate at Northwestern University.
Filmmaker and visual artist Paul Rowley first began making films in1995 and has since completed over 30 shorts, feature films, video installations, and documentaries, which have been shown in galleries and at prestigious film festivals around the world. Collaborative partnerships are a central part of his award-winning work.  These accolades include the Glen Dimplex Award, the Irish American Art Award (both the under 35 and overall prize), the New Langton Arts Award, and nominations at the Irish Film and Television Awards. He has received funded by the Irish Arts Council, the Irish Film Board, Culture Ireland, and the New York Foundation for the Arts and has received fellowships from the MacDowell Artist Colony, the Bogliasco Foundation in Genoa, and the Atlantic Centre for the Arts.
Till by Turning is the collective effort of violist Amy Cimini, violinist Erica Dicker, pianist Emily Manzo, and bassoonist Katherine Young- four creative performers who work as composers, educators, scholars, songwriters and improvisers.  The quartet commissions new chamber music by established and emerging artists.  TBT has appeared in concert throughout the US and Europe performing the music of Harold Meltzer, Jessica Pavone, Aaron Siegel, Ornette Coleman, Matt Marble, James Tenney, Jim Altieri, Olivier Messiaen, Sabrina Schroeder, Christian Wolff, Jordan McLean, Faust and Jason Cady.

///RAIN MACHINE (Kyp Malone of TVOTR)

/////CHRISTY & EMILY

/////////DAVID FIRST & JEANANN DARA (aka The Western Enisphere)

Advance tickets here:
http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=3575424&pl=boweryelectric

A very special evening of music will take place at the Bowery Electric in Manhattan on June 7, 2013. It will be night of songs, experimentation, and pure sonic goodness.

Opening the evening is David First , whose band the Notekillers hit the scene in 1980, releasing the single, The Zipper, at the peak of the no-wave movement. Since then David has worked in the genres of opera, synth pop, and extensively in drones and interference beats.

The second act will be the debut of Katie Eastburn's newest project. Katie gained massive Indie credentials for leading the band, Young People, who released the self titled Young People, and the critically acclaimed War Prayers on the legendary 5 Rue Christine label. Although that group disbanded (ex members now play with Lavender Diamond and the Liars) , Katie has maintained a presence in the NYC music scene as a soloist.  This show will feature a full band accompanying her for a fresh set of songs.

Third is the remarkable Christy&Emily, whose debut record, Gueen's Head was released by the  the Social Registry label. Their music brought them to the attention of Joachim Irmler, famed keyboardist of kraut rockers, Faust; who produced and released two C&E albums, No Rest andTic Tac Toe, on the German label, Klangbad. Extensive tours in Europe followed. Emily Manzo is also widely known for her contribution to the NYC classical new music scene, performing works by John Cage, Gyorgi Ligeti, Matthew Welsh, and many others. Bassist, Peter Kerlin and drummerKristin Mueller are the rhythm section mainstays for C&E, but joining the group will be special performances by composer Jessica Pavone, violist Karen Waltuch, and vocalist Rachel Cox of Oakley Hall.

Closing the night will be Rain Machine. Fresh from their recent performance at the ATP festival, Rain Machine is the brainchild of Kyp Malone of TV on the RadioTVOTR need no introductions, and seeing Rain Machine is a unique and intimate way to see one of today's most dynamic creators in action. Kyp's influence on the international contemporary music scene is a lasting one.
